Red Kites Class Explore Seasonality and Food Safety Through Pizza Making!

Red Kites class have been on a fantastic learning journey exploring seasonal food, food hygiene, and safe cooking skills — all through the delicious experience of making their very own pizzas!
We have learnt about food hygiene and completing a quiz to test our understanding. The children explored why keeping clean in the kitchen is so important and how good hygiene helps keep us healthy.
After this, everyone designed their own food safety posters, thinking carefully about the key messages we wanted to share. We also looked at a range of kitchen scenarios to identify potential dangers and discuss how to stay safe.
Next, we explored where the food we eat comes from and talked about seasonality — why certain foods grow best at certain times of the year. We sorted a selection of foods into the correct food groups and discussed their nutritional value.
To prepare for creating our own pizzas, we taste‑tested a variety of toppings. For each one, we analysed:
This helped us think carefully about the ingredients we wanted on our final pizzas.
Before making the dough, we practised safe cutting skills using cucumber. Children used the bridge and claw grips to peel, grate, and chop confidently and safely.
Working in teams, we followed a recipe to make our dough from scratch. We:
Then we carefully measured the dry and liquid ingredients. We dissolved the yeast into the water, added it to the flour, mixed everything together, and then added the salt. After that, we kneaded the mixture until it became smooth and elastic. The dough was then covered and placed in the fridge overnight to prove.
The next day, we returned to our dough — now beautifully risen! We chopped our toppings safely using the claw, fork, and bridge cutting techniques, preparing everything we needed for our own individual pizzas.
We stretched out our dough, added our chosen toppings, and then proudly helped to cook them in the pizza oven under the supervision of Chef Stan.
Finally, the best part — eating! Once we enjoyed our freshly baked pizzas, we evaluated them for:
Red Kites class showed wonderful teamwork, enthusiasm, and growing culinary confidence. We are incredibly proud of all the skills they learned and the thoughtful discussions they had about food, safety, and seasonality.
