Our work on learning times tables is now well underway. While we will be spending many of our maths lessons between now and February focusing on multiplication and division, we cannot stress enough how vitally important it is that children are supported at home to practise their times tables regularly.

Today, the children have all come home with a practice pack designed to help them. Please encourage your child to use this pack as often as possible, as strong times tables knowledge will make a huge difference to their confidence and success in maths.

What’s in the pack and how to use it:

Looking is learning: In class, we have a mantra that “looking is learning”. To support this, the pack includes a multiplication grid so children can look up answers to questions they do not yet know.

Written quizzes: The pack includes practice papers that can be completed at home. If your child returns a marked sheet to school, they will receive a gold sticker!

Singing songs: The Percy Parker songs are brilliant for learning tables. They can be accessed via the website, YouTube, and most music streaming services.

Hit the Button: A fantastic online resource that the children already use in school.

Just enter the school code QYS SHJ followed by the relevant code for whichever recap quiz you are practicing. The class blog has all the codes for the Autumn Term.

Times tables:

From after the October half term children will continue work on learning times-tables by heart. To support this, all children will be sent home with a multiplication grid to keep at home. Please stick this up at home somewhere visible and encourage children to look at it when they practice counting in steps of 3, 4, 6 or 8, when you ask them times-tables questions or when they complete home learning tasks on Century Learning or play Hit The Button. Looking is Learning, so the more frequently children look at the grid, the more quickly they will be able to recall the facts. By the summer of Year 4 children are expected to know all times tables to 12x12 by heart so it is vital that they are supported to start this process now.

Boom reader

Children do not need to ask to change their reading book. There are a wealth of books available at anytime from our class library. Children have been allocated a reading book colour and they are free to choose any book of interest from within this colour range. It is expected that you will record on Boom Reader when your child reads. This should take place at least 3 times every week, which means by this point in the term at least 15 reads should have been logged. As children become more confident with their reading, they may be starting to read to themselves and tell you about what they have read. This is very appropriate, but should still be recorded. Remember that you can log more than one read at a time by editing the date. Going forward we will be checking Boom Reader on a Monday to ensure that at least 3 reads have been recorded for the previous week. The school code for Boom Reader is 87952.

Accelerated Reader or Big Cat Library

RKE stands for Remember, Know and Explore and these demonstrate to our pupils what they need to remember from previous learning to support current learning, what they will Know by the end of this unit and what they can Explore at home around the learning. We are so proud of how our pupils engage with this and we would like to ask again that you look at these to direct conversations around learning at home and undertake some of the Explore section. It is a real dip 'n' pick and we would like any of this work brought into school for us to celebrate by Thursday 9th October 2025.

Year 3 had the best afternoon ever on their sunny local walk! The children set off with maps in hand, brimming with excitement and ready to explore. Along the way, they put their navigation skills to the test, confidently following the route and spotting key landmarks. There was plenty of curiosity and laughter as they discovered a variety of funky mushrooms growing along the woodland paths – some with bright colours and unusual shapes that sparked lots of questions and wonder!

As part of their learning, the children did a brilliant job distinguishing between physical and human features – from the gently flowing river and rolling hills to buildings, roads, and signposts. They were especially fascinated by the way the river weaved its way through the landscape and enjoyed taking a peaceful moment to observe it. It was a hands-on, muddy-boots kind of learning day that brought the classroom outdoors and left everyone with big smiles and a sense of adventure.

Year 3 had an incredible journey this week during their visit to the Explorer Dome! Stepping inside the magical inflatable planetarium, the children were whisked away on a thrilling journey all about forces. They were introduced to none other than Sir Isaac Newton himself (well, almost!), and explored fascinating concepts like air resistance and what it means to be aerodynamic. With interactive demonstrations and plenty of excitement, they learnt to distinguish what is and isn’t a rocket – and then got hands-on by building their very own dry ice-powered rockets that went off with an impressive POP!

But the fun didn’t stop there – after launching their rockets, the children blasted off on a pretend voyage into space! They zoomed past stars, explored the vast unknown, and safely returned to Earth just in time to witness the shimmering beauty of the Northern Lights. The room was filled with awe and wonder, and many of the children left the dome buzzing with dreams of becoming future astronauts. Who knows – with their newfound knowledge of rockets and space, perhaps one day they'll be packing their bags for a holiday amongst the stars!

What a fantastic day we had at Butser Ancient Farm with our Year 3 adventurers! As soon as we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by the friendly staff, who kicked off our experience with a quick but important safety talk. We then made our way to a real-life roundhouse where the children were transported back in time with a fascinating insight into Stone Age life — complete with smoky smells, animal skins, and tales of ancient living. The excitement continued as we explored the farm, learning about Iron Age houses, ancient crops and traditional ways of living.

The hands-on activities were a real highlight! The children got creative with clay, carefully shaping either a bowl or bead just like people might have done thousands of years ago. After working up an appetite, we enjoyed a lunch break in the cozy roundhouse (what a unique picnic spot!). In the afternoon, the children became archaeologists, taking part in a dig where they discovered all sorts of ancient treasures buried beneath the soil. It was a brilliant, muddy, memory-making day filled with learning, laughter and a whole lot of fun.

The day was not only packed with activities but also sparked so much curiosity and conversation amongst the children. It was wonderful to see them so engaged — asking thoughtful questions, making connections to what they've learnt in class and working together during each task. The archaeological dig especially brought out their inner explorers, as they carefully brushed away soil and uncovered artefacts with great care and excitement. We’re sure they’ve come away with a deeper understanding of life in the Stone Age — and plenty of stories to share at home!

Along the way we spotted wooden infrastructure such as fences, telegraph poles, gates, signs and buildings. We practised our map reading skills, all following our individual maps and working out which path we should take at forks and cross roads before proceeding. Although the movement time was just over an hour, we were out of school for two hours but stopped along the way for snacks, bark rubbing, leaf identification and photo opportunities!

Our Year 3 and 4 residential to Cobnor has now come to an end. As with yesterday, the day started with a corridor disco. Everyone was fast asleep when 'the meatball song' was played to wake everyone up, and it took at least 15 minutes before everyone was awake enough to start the day with a full rendition of the YMCA in our pyjamas. Before we could head to breakfast, we had to strip our beds and pack all our belongings. Only a few unclaimed socks were left behind, so we were very impressed and Miss Jameson was able to award plenty of room points in her final inspection of the trip.

Our morning activities were Archery and Tree climbing. These were great fun but also gave the children the opportunity to show how resilient and encouraging they are. With climbing especially, the goal was to set an aim and try to exceed this. It was wonderful to see children smashing their goals and praising each other.

After lunch, the final room points were counted up with the reward of pouring a bucket over Mrs Kelsey's head given to the winning room. This seemed like a much better idea on Monday in 32 degrees of heat, but a promise is a promise!

No doubt the children are all exhausted and already tucked up in bed. Hopefully they have had plenty to chat about from their trip, but please do look at the photos together (they have not had a chance to see them). The children have written journals about their trip to share with you, but you might like to ask your children: who they got to know that they didn't already know; what are they most proud of themselves for; when did they overcome a fear and how did it feel to do it; what was the most challenging thing they experienced; what kind thing did they do or say to someone else; how was someone kind to you; what was your mystery object at the beach and what story did you make up about it; how did it feel to swim in the sea; what was the view like from the climbing tree; what is 'on top' about in archery; why are some buoys green and red in the harbour; what people / things / experiences are you grateful for; what character strength did you use the most on the trip.

We are incredibly proud of the children on this trip. They have exceeded our expectations in every way. Mealtimes have been a real joy, with the children making an effort to sit with different people each time, use perfect manners, clear their own plates and pay a compliment to chef Alex at the end of the meal. At the end of every activity they thanked the instructors, explaining what they had enjoyed about the session.

Tuesday started with a 7am dance party in the corridor, a fitting celebration for everyone having slept soundly all night long! The few people who woke up early did a wonderful job of staying quiet in their beds and ensuring they didn't wake anyone else up - thank you! Miss Jameson's room inspection took place before a hearty breakfast was devoured by all.

Our first session was paddling, which saw us all out on the water in canoes and kayaks. Everyone took part, demonstrating fantastic determination and resilience to get to grips with how to make the boats go where we wanted! Once we had mastered paddling sitting down we tried other ways of steering, including standing up, which quickly changed tack to lots of jumping in and racing around the boats from the sea. The water was so warm, it was a joy to be splashing and laughing in the harbour.

After showers and lunch, we were back out at sea again, this time in groups of six children with an instructor each for keel boat sailing. We sailed south from Cobnor towards Chichester Harbour entrance, noticing landmarks and nautical marks that we had seen from Hayling Island when we visited Beach School. Everyone had a turn at the helm, and we all helped with adjusting the main sheet and jib sheets as we sailed in different directions.

Dinner this evening was a delicious home-cooked roast followed by apple crumble and custard. To round a wonderful day off, we had a short relaxation time in our rooms, then headed to the field for games and a singalong around the campfire, with marshmallows! To ensure we were absolutely ready to sleep the second our heads hit the pillow, we then went for another walk, heading south towards Cobnor Point to find interesting objects and made up stories about what their connection to the past could have been.

These sessions were great fun and everyone really enjoyed working together and being competitive. By the end of the afternoon, it was getting very hot, so we decided the best way to cool down was with an enormous water fight. By the end, everyone was soaked and laughing their heads off. It didn't take us long to dry out playing some games in front of our lodge then everyone had a shower and changed for dinner.

Chef Alex cooked up 'the best mac'n'cheese I've ever eaten', 'delicious meatballs' and treated us all to chocolate brownie and ice-cream for dessert. All 24 plates were spotless at the end of the meal.

After dinner we organised our rooms ready for our first inspection, then headed off on a 4KM walk along the shoreline towards Chidham. We saw beautiful scenery, recapped lots of our history, geography and science curriculum and admired the golden sunset. Having made it back at 9:30 all teeth were brushed and everyone is settled into bed.

We started on the stone side of the beach, building rock towers so we could see the tide coming in, then became treasure hunters looking for interesting items on the shore that we could use to create group museums. We carefully arranged the items we found into different groups, righting labels and agreeing our 'Star Item'. After lunch, we explored the sandy side of the beach, enjoying time with our friends, climbing over the sea defence rocks, litter-picking, building sand castles before heading to the shoreline for a paddle. To have a look at our photos see here: https://sway.cloud.microsoft/1DRH9dLWObYeKy0F?ref=Link

In maths we are working very hard to learn how to tell the time. In Y2 children learnt about o'clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past. In Year 3 they need to be confident telling the time to the nearest minute on both analogue and digital clocks.

They also need to know how to use a calendar. To support this work, I ask that you please dedicate time over half term to practicing this essential life skill with your children. I have prepared the following resources to help you do this:

Please point out clocks in your environment and support children to read the time correctly. Ask them how many minutes past the hour it is and how many minutes until the next hour it is.

Use the plastic clocks that I have sent home in children's bags to practice moving the hands of the clock to the correct place. Please ensure these are returned after half term.

Help your children to learn the 30 days have September poem off by heart. I have attached a copy to this email. Show them calendars in your home. Ask them what month we are in, which came before and which came after. Explore which month friend's and family birthdays and celebrations take place in.

Use these infinity quizzes to practice the key skills. School Code: QYS SHJ Y2 quiz codes: 29-85-65, 85-83-69, 33-42-64 and Y3 quiz codes: 11-57-64, 86-55-78, 08-21-07, 35-69-96, 91-33,88.

Complete the questions on the sheets that are attached to this email and that have also been sent home in your children's bags.

Please return this work on Tuesday 3rd June. Children who can recite the poem and bring in completed sheets with their returned clocks will be given a gold sticker.

Many thanks in anticipation of your support with this vital learning.
